Overview

The Senior Systems Engineer will be responsible for the design, installation, execution, administration, and maintenance of the company's Linux servers as well as their underlying infrastructure and equipment. This includes responsibility for monitoring the services and systems using various monitoring and performance gathering tools as well as doing capacity planning and forecasting. This position will also serve as primary or secondary support for various aspects of the company’s infrastructure. Lastly, this position will collaborate with peer engineers on major and minor projects related to streamlining, automating, and standardizing the company’s infrastructure.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in relevant field or equivalent related work experience. Successful candidates should possess 10+ years of experience with Linux systems administration.

 

Experience with the following is desired:

  • Linux (i.e. RedHat, Debian) and/or BSD system administration
  • General programming/scripting ability for system administration (perl, shell, python, ruby)
  • Virtualization (VMWare vSphere/ESX/ESXi)
  • Java application servers (e.g. Tomcat, WildFly, Jetty) and server experience with JRE/JDKs
  • Open source environments and tooling
  • System/network design practices, principles and techniques, including common security best practices
  • System patching and compliance reporting (e.g. SpaceWalk, Landscape)
  • Automation/steady state (e.g. Chef, Puppet, Salt, Ansible)
  • Technical lead and/or project management role for IT-related projects

Other important knowledge areas for this position include any of the following:

  • LAMP environments (Linux, Apache, MySQL/PostgreSQL, PHP)
  • A solid understanding and practical knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, SMTP, NTP, DHCP and other networking protocols
  • A solid understanding of web technologies (HTTP, cookies, sessions, proxies, etc.)
  • DevOps tools, processes, implementations, and operations with a focus on infrastructure and service automation as well as public/private cloud integration
  • Understanding and experience deploying and supporting AWS cloud environments

 

Candidates must be professional, have strong initiative, and be able to work effectively both independently and in a team. Must be highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and should possess the ability to task switch effectively. Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills are mandatory. Ideally candidates should have strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at both a technical and non-technical level as well as the ability to clearly and efficiently document their processes in a regulated, compliant computing environment.
