The Director, Legal is responsible for facilitating all aspects of Rho’s legal function and will serve as the primary point of contact for both internal and external customers on legal matters. Rho’s Director, Legal ensures timely analysis, review, reconciliation, approval, execution, and status reporting of all Rho contracts, both commercial and federal.  Additionally, the Director, Legal will perform a variety of in-house legal tasks, including providing counsel on highly complex and sensitive legal matters.  This position will advise senior management on appropriate action to be taken in all situations of legal import.  The Director, Legal must have the ability to contribute substantively to the legal analysis and risk analysis involved in highly complex contracts and to clearly articulate issues to management.


The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of performing as legal counsel in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry with a focus on contract formulation and negotiation.


  • Serve as a mentor to company legal professionals.
  • Oversee or perform initial legal review and drafting of various contracts to support internal clients' needs, including master, confidentiality, consulting, sponsored research, vendor, intellectual property and other services-related agreements, using corporate templates as appropriate under the circumstances. All contracts must be executed in Rho's best interest.
  • Manage the continued development and refinement of company contract templates and approved alternative language.
  • Effectively manage and collaborate with outside counsel, as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external clients to set appropriate priorities and deliver results within the timelines established.
  • Give accurate and timely counsel to internal stakeholders on a variety of legal topics (FDA and other relevant regulations, business law, contracts law, employment law, privacy laws, federal contracting provisions, etc.)
  • Research and evaluate risks regarding business decisions and operations and proactively advise on possible legal issues.
  • Communicate and negotiate with external and internal parties, creating relationships built on trust.
  • Keep internal employees and other stakeholders properly and timely informated of the progress and status of contracts in the process of being negotiated.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.
  • Conduct work with the highest degree of integrity, responsibility, and excellence in client service.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with a variety of different personalities.


  • Juris Doctor degree and admission to a state bar, North Carolina preferred
  • A minimum of 8 years' in-house legal experience or comparable experience as outside corporate counsel
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry experience preferred
  • Prior litigation experience preferred
  • Exemplary organizational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and low rate of error
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to treat highly confidential information in a professional and discreet manner
  • Ability to stay focused and effective in managing multiple priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively with all levels both within and outside the company
