  • Overview

    The Director, Business Development is responsible for creating and maintaining a sales pipeline to secure business opportunities for Rho within the assigned territory.  The individual selected will generate sales leads, prospect viable sales opportunities, and build and maintain relationships with current and potential client key decision makers and ensure excellent customer service.  The Director, Business Development will work closely with his/her assigned internal team and leadership to create a successful sales strategy. 


    • Prospect, introduce and sell Rho’s capabilities to new and existing clients to create new business towards the achievement of targeted annual goals.
    • Coordinate with business development team, leaders and company SME’s to develop compelling client presentations.
    • Ensure a high level of communication and customer service.
    • Work with business development leadership to execute annual marketing campaigns and sales strategies within assigned territory.
    • Attend industry specific trade shows, conferences and business development meetings; participate in local and regional industry specific networking groups.
    • Mentor and guide junior level employees with lead generation efforts and client interaction.
    • Assist with proposal activities and lead bid defense meetings to new and existing clients; ensure timely responses and follow-up to both internal and external clients.
    • Work closely with Rho’s legal team during contract negotiations.
    • Enter, update and maintain accurate data within Salesforce.com.
    • Provide market updates and sales metrics to business development leadership team on a frequent basis. 


    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing or related field.
    • 5+ years of related sales or marketing experience in a CRO, pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment.
    • 3+ years of experience as a Director, Business Development in a CRO (or similar) environment.
    • Experience selling to biotech companies within the CNS and Rare disease space preferred.
    • Demonstrated success in achieving sales goals year-after-year.
    • Broad-based networking skills; demonstrated ability to build and maintain business relationships.
    • Effective presentation, documentation and interpersonal skills.
    • Experience working in a matrixed environment with SMEs from across the company.
    • Strong business acumen, proposal strategy and negotiation skills.
    • Understanding of the clinical drug trial phase process.
    • Experience working remotely.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products.
    • Ability to travel as need, including to Rho’s office in Durham, NC.  Expected travel is up to 50%.
    • Excellent communication skills.
